How to LocallyU?

One-Month Plan

Week One


- Buy 30% of your groceries at a LocallyU approved store

- Think about where your clothes come from. If possible, push the clothes from unapproved or “bad” sources to the side. What you have left will give you an indication of what you’ll need for the future

- Shop at one LocallyU approved store during the week

Week Two


- Buy 70% of your groceries at a LocallyU approved store

- Make a recipe that you’ve never tried before

- If possible, only wear the clothes that you believe would be LocallyU Approved. If you don’t have any, buy an approved outfit to wear once or twice during the week.

- Shop at two LocallyU approved stores during the week

- Add an activity to your routine that supports the LocallyU Initiative (e.g. read more, bike instead of drive, volunteer, promote a local business, etc.)

Week Three


- Buy all of your groceries at a LocallyU approved store

- Switch two businesses that you normally shop at for two that are LocallyU Approved

- Update your wardrobe to include more LocallyU Approved items

- Add two activities to your routine that support the LocallyU Initiative

- Request 1-2 local businesses for LocallyU Approval

Week Four


- Do the majority of your weekly shopping at LocallyU Approved businesses

- Request 2-3 local businesses for LocallyU Approval

- Continue to try new recipes that you’ve never made before

- Educate your friends on the importance of the LocallyU Initiative

Six-Month Plan

Months One-Three


- Look at the list of LUA (LocallyU Approved) businesses in your area. Begin comparing them to the businesses you normally shop at

- Replace 2-4 businesses you normally shop at with LUA stores

- Explore one new business a week. No need to buy, just try and find something new and unique.

- Submit 5 businesses for LU Approval

- Begin buying groceries from LUA businesses

- Buy your next article of clothing from an LUA business

Months Three-Five


- Do 70% of your shopping at LUA businesses

- Submit 5 businesses for LU Approval

- Take part in a community-based initiative

- Share the site/app with your friends and family

- Buy all groceries from LUA businesses

- Gradually begin replacing your wardrobe with LUA items

- When unexpected purchases arise (i.e. car repair, tech support, etc.) research options at LUA businesses first

Month Six


- Do all of your shopping at LUA businesses

- Submit 5 businesses for LU Approval

- Share the site/app with friends, family, and business owners

- Continue to replace wardrobe with LUA items

- Use LUA businesses for most unexpected purchases

- Shop at LUA businesses while traveling, or submit new places for approval if they are not on the site already

One-Year Plan

Months One-Four


- Look at the list of LUA businesses in your area. Begin comparing them to the businesses you normally shop at.

- Each month, replace one business you normally shop at with an LUA business.

- Take part in a community-based initiative

- Submit one business for LU approval each month

- Begin buying the majority of your groceries from LUA businesses

- Begin buying clothes from LUA businesses

Months Five-Eight


- Do about half your shopping at LUA businesses

- Take part in a community-based initiative

- Buy a gift for a birthday/holiday from an LUA business

- Submit two businesses for LU Approval each month

- Buy all of your groceries from an LUA business

- Buy from LUA businesses when traveling

- Watch a documentary about the food industry, inequality, working conditions, etc.; anything that will spark passion within you to create a change.

- Share the site/app with friends and family

Months Nine-Twelve


- Do 70% of your shopping at LUA businesses

- Take part in multiple community-based initiatives

- Become an LU Agent by submitting multiple businesses for approval each months

- Update your wardrobe with LUA items

- Educate your friends on the importance of the LocallyU Initiative

- Buy exclusively from LUA businesses while travelling. If the city you’re in is not on LU yet, begin submitting businesses for approval.

- Host a documentary screening.

- Organize a “buy day”. Have a large group of people all shop at one business on one specified day (essentially a Flash Mob).

- Enjoy being a wonderful consumer. Congratulations on making a difference!

Broke College Student


- Make one meal per week with LU Approved goods

- Buy alcohol from local brewery/winery

- Take part in a community-based initiative

- Have your next article of clothing be LU Approved

- Buy one book this semester from LU Approved supplier

- Submit three businesses for LU Approval this semester

- Explore one new LU Approved store each month. No need to buy anything, just explore. You might find something interesting!

- Take your parents to an LU Approved restaurant when they come visit. Mooch a meal while you can.

- Take a boy/girl on a date to an LU Approved restaurant. You can talk about how much you care about making the world a better place. You’ll seem genuine.
